Appledore Visual Arts Festival 2003

Appledore Arts ran a four day Appledore Arts Festival in 2003. The overall aim of the project is to, develop a high quality professional regional visual arts and crafts event in Appledore, capable of attracting 10,000+ visitors.

Appledore Futures Employment Solutions

At the end of 2003 Appledore Shipyard was closed with the loss of over 500 direct employees and knock-on implications for around 250 sub-contractors.
As a result the shop stewards of the Unions based within Appledore started to explore possible options that would provide employment opportunities, training and job security for the redundant workers. This project is based on one of those options - to establish a worker owned recruitment / employment agency run by its membership.

Art in the Landscape

Through the development and delivery of a series of pilot art projects, Northern Devon Coast and Countryside Service in collaboration with other project managers will create a regional model that will demonstrate the role that arts can play in rural regeneration.

A361/A39 Feasibility Study

The project comprises a study to investigate the opportunities for stimulating tourism through the branding and promotion of the A361/A39 highway and its boardering areas. The feasibility study will profile economic and environmental possibilities and issues. This study will result in a development plan that will be used to apply for further funding from Objective 2.

The study will identify:

  • A suitable management structure for the implementation of the project.
  • The environmental impact of the different options.
  • The number and type of local producers, suppliers and other business that may benefit from this development.
  • The impact on employment in the area - i.e. seasonal .v. full time.
  • The impact on the delicate environmental areas that surround the highways - i.e. the Biosphere and Exmoor National Park.
  • The planning and statutory requirements.
  • Potential partners for the marketing and development.
  • Potential sources of match funding.
