North West Devon LEADER+

Projects - I

Ilfracombe Community Transport

The project will bring together a Joint Steering Committee with membership from NDVDA and Ilfracombe Community Transport to link the two schemes. It will appoint a transport coordinator who will facilitate the coordination of journeys by engaging and supporting volunteer staff to run a joint phone line. This will ensure that appropriate vehicles are used for each journey. The coordinator will facilitate training for both car and minibus drivers, as well as 'transport days' to advertise the project and recruit new volunteers. Furthermore, the project will explore new ways of ensuring a sustainable future for community transport and explore ways of generating income to improve the long-term viability of the schemes.

Interpretation Strategy

The designation of the Biosphere Reserve centred on Braunton Burrows, the development of the North Devon AONB Management Plan and a variety of other existing initiatives such as 'Ruby Country' has highlighted the need for strategic guidance on the provision of interpretation facilities.

The main aims of the strategy are

  • to provide a framework of objectives and purposes for interpretation of the area
  • to stimulate interest in the provision of high-quality and well-planned interpretation facilities and services within the area
  • identify the key target audiences for new facilities and services
  • suggest a number of specific exemplar interpretation projects that could be developed and implemented in the future
  • identify specific roles for the different stakeholders within the area with regard to the provision, promotion and maintenance of interpretation facilities and services.

It is intended that the Strategy for Interpretation of Northern Devon will be adopted by all relevant public, private and voluntary stakeholders, and will be designed to form the basis for developing enhanced environmental and heritage interpretation facilities and services for the area.

Innovators Feasibility Study

The project consists of a feasibility study to examine the needs of innovators in North West Devon.

The study identified:

  • The number of innovators in the area
  • The existing facilities available to them
  • Potential partnerships with other agencies
  • Difficulties faced with regard to access, whether to training or facilities
  • The level of support required
  • The feasibility of a "Centre for Innovators"
  • Potential links with other innovation centres
